Draft Results: Spokane Chiefs confirms multiple deals

The Spokane Chiefs entered today’s WHL Prospects Draft with nine total picks, four of which were in the top 100. After all was said and done, Spokane and Chiefs General Manager Matt Bardsley selected five forwards, three defensemen, and one goaltender. Spokane had the 7th overall pick for the first time since 1995, and they selected an extremely gifted forward from Alberta, Ossie McIntyre.

1st round: 7th overall – Ossie McIntyre (F)

With the seventh overall pick, Spokane selected forward Ossie McIntyre!

McIntyre spent the 2023-24 season with the St. Albert Sabres (AAA U15) and put up very impressive numbers. The 5-foot-6 forward from St. Albert, Alberta, stacked up an AEHL leading 55 goals in just 34 games along with 49 assists for a total of 104 points. In the playoffs, McIntyre tallied another 21 points on 14 goals and seven assists in nine playoff games and helped lead the Sabres to a championship.

“We are extremely excited to have been able to select Ossie,” Bardsley said. “He is an elusive skater with an elite skill set and sense for the game. The ability to score or set up his teammates makes it difficult for opposing teams to defend. He loves to play the game and we love his infectious personality.”

The 15-year-old joins an elite group of Chiefs players drafted in the first round and will look to develop and hope to make his WHL debut this season, though, 15-year-olds are only eligible to play five games in the Western Hockey League.

2nd round: 34th overall – Harry Mattern (D)

In round two, Spokane selected defenseman Harry Mattern with the 34th overall pick!

Mattern, from Sherwood Park, Alberta, played 27 games with the Northern Alberta Xtreme (U15) and tallied 34 points on 18 assists and 16 goals. He added another seven points (1G, 6A) in the team’s five game playoff run.

“Harry is a strong defender with great leadership skills and a big heart. He’s a smooth skater with lots of layers to his game. He’s a good kid and we’re excited to bring him into the organization,” Greg Batters said, the head Alberta scout for Spokane.

4th round: 74th overall – Bryson Roberts (D)

After not having a pick in the third round, the Chiefs selected Bryson Roberts, a defenseman from Maple Ridge, BC., with the 74th pick in the fourth round.

Roberts played for the Delta Hockey Academy U15 Prep Green this past season. In 24 games he found the back of the net five times and added 13 assists for 18 points.

“Bryson is a highly competitive, physical defenseman with excellent instincts. He wins puck battles all over the ice and is poised and skilled in moving the puck. He brings a winning attitude and will be an excellent addition to our young defensive core,” said George Ross, Spokane’s head BC scout
