Upon allowing multiple top players from the previous season to leave in free agency, the Toronto Argonauts signed receiver Damonte Coxie again.
Wide receiver Damonte Coxie, a 2023 breakthrough star, has re-signed with the Toronto Argonauts.
After allowing some of the most impressive Argos from the previous season to leave without a fight in free agency, the Boatmen are back in the race to sign a player they deemed essential in 2024.
In2023, Coxie, then 27 years old, and quarterback Chad Kelly forged an impressive big-play partnership.
Last season, Coxie caught 39 receptions for 787 yards (second on the club) and five touchdowns, which led the CFL in yards per reception at 20.2.
In 2022, the 6-3, 200-pound pass catcher joined the Argos. During his rookie season in the CFL, he gained experience in the Canadian game and hauled in 15 receptions for 210 yards in seven games.
From 2016 to 2020, the Louisiana native attended Memphis to play collegiate football. In 43 games, he caught 185 passes for 2,948 yards and 20 touchdowns. In Memphis’ history, Coxie was the second player to post consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.
Coxie’s is an illustration of Toronto’s capacity to recognise and nurture brilliance.
As of Tuesday, when the official free-agency signing period opens, the Argos have eight pending free agents. Over the past few days, six players from the team from the previous season have agreed to contracts with different CFL teams.
Kicker Boris Bede (Edmonton), defensive end Brandon Barlow (Hamilton), running back A.J. Ouellette (Saskatchewan), defensive tackle Dewayne Hendrix (Hamilton), cornerback Jamal Peters (Hamilton), and defensive back Adarius Pickett (Ottawa) are all off the Boatmen’s ship.
