DONE DEAL: The BC Lions have signed a former Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback

Roughriders' Jake Dolegala ready for start under centre against Lions

For the second straight day in free agency, the BC Lions add a quarterback with Jake Dolegala joining the squad on Wednesday.

The BC Lions are prioritizing the development of their quarterback depth. On the second day of free agency, they signed Jake Dolegala, a former quarterback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Dolegala entered the CFL in 2022 with the Riders, serving as the backup quarterback for two seasons. He played in 15 games, with 13 appearances last year. Over his career, he has amassed 2,795 passing yards, throwing 12 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

The substantial playing opportunities in 2023 demonstrated Dolegala’s quarterback abilities. He passed for 2,641 yards, with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Additionally, he scored a rushing touchdown. Dolegala was one of three quarterbacks for the Riders who started games, alongside Trevor Harris and Mason Fine.

Between 2019 and 2021, Dolegala played in the NFL for four different teams: the Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers, and Miami Dolphins.

The decision to move was likely prompted by the prospect of continuing to serve as a backup, with Trevor Harris expected to be the primary starter for Saskatchewan. Dolegala now joins a quarterback group that includes Vernon Adams Jr., who is likely the front-runner to start in 2024.
