The Arizona Diamondbacks wrapped up their off-season activities with the signing of Joc Pederson to a one-year contract, a move deemed both cost-effective and strategic as they gear up to defend their National League title.

Primarily a left-handed hitter, Pederson is anticipated to serve as a designated hitter and occasional left fielder, providing a valuable asset in a division, the NL West, where the other four contenders heavily lean towards right-handed starting rotations.

In the Diamondbacks’ lineup, he stands as the solitary left-handed middle-of-the-order bat, complementing existing players like first baseman Christian Walker, left fielder/DH Lourdes Gurriel Jr., catcher Gabriel Moreno, and the newly acquired third baseman Eugenio Suarez.

Recognizing the increasing right-handed dominance in the middle of their lineup, General Manager Mike Hazen emphasized Pederson’s ability to excel against right-handed pitchers. The strategic signing aligns with the expectation that the division’s pitching would be predominantly right-handed.

Joc Pederson’s inclusion in the roster also provides flexibility for manager Torey Lovullo. It allows him to maintain left-handed hitter Corbin Carroll and switch-hitter Ketel Marte in the 1-2 spots in the lineup while keeping lefty Alex Thomas and righty Gerardo Perdomo at the bottom.

“It seemed like the right fit for our team,” Hazen expressed.

Joc Pederson, at 31, mentioned exploring multi-year contract options but ultimately opted for a one-year deal valued at $12.5 million. His compensation includes $9.5 million for the upcoming 2024 season, and the Diamondbacks retain a $14 million option for 2025, featuring a $3 million buyout.
