The Spokane Chiefs have proudly announced that Rhett Sather, a defenseman prospect, has signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. Sather, who was selected in the fourth round (68th overall) of the previous year’s WHL Prospects Draft, has decided to continue his development with the Spokane Chiefs organization.

Chiefs General Manager Matt Bardsley expressed his excitement about Sather’s decision, highlighting his exceptional edgework, overall skating ability, puck skills, and sense for the game. Bardsley believes these qualities will make Sather an excellent defenseman both offensively and defensively, further strengthening the Chiefs’ roster, particularly among the strong group of 2008-born players who have committed to the team.

Hailing from Cochrane, Alberta, the 5-foot-9 blueliner had an impressive 2023-24 season with Calgary IHA U17 Prep, accumulating 30 points from 10 goals and 20 assists in 29 games. He also contributed two assists during the playoffs. Sather’s performance did not go unnoticed, as he was named the MVP of the Bauer U17 Invite in October, following Calgary Hockey Academy’s tournament victory. Additionally, he was selected for the PCHA U17 Winter Classic’s All-Tournament Team in February, further showcasing his talent and potential.

Prior to being drafted by the Chiefs, Sather posted 29 points (6G-23A) over 32 games with the Airdrie Xtreme U15 AAA squad in 2022-23.

“I am extremely excited to be part of the Chiefs organization,” Sather said. “It’s a great team, great city, and great things are coming.”

Sather joins fellow 2008-born signed prospects F Brody Gillespie (1st-overall, U.S. Priority Draft), F Mathis Preston (3rd-overall, WHL Prospects Draft), G Carter Esler (22nd-overall, WHL Prospects Draft), D Kaden Allan (24th-overall, WHL Prospects Draft), and F Cohen Harris (47th-overall, WHL Prospects Draft).

He is first eligible to join the Chiefs as a full-time player during the 2024-25 season.
