After 13 seasons, it seems like the Dallas Cowboys are moving on from Tyron Smith.
When he becomes a free agent on March 13, the 33-year-old is “unlikely” to rejoin his original team, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. It is anticipated that teams looking for an offensive tackle will consider Smith to be “highly coveted”.
Smith has been a member of the Cowboys for the longest. The lineman was allegedly not thinking about retiring in February, which is why the news of his potential departure from the squad has surfaced. Instead, the Dallas Morning News reported, he was searching for a contract to stay in Dallas.

According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News on Saturday, Dallas is interested in keeping Smith. The NFL scouting combine is still going on, and both parties are said to have reached a turning point when they couldn’t agree on the “financial framework” for a deal. Gehlken stated that while the team is not ruling out a reunion, talks would need to take a significant turn for the better.

2011 saw him picked out of USC with the ninth overall pick, and he moved to Dallas. He received numerous honors, such as eight Pro Bowl nominations and two first-team All-Pro choices. Along with Aaron Donald and Tom Brady, Smith was selected for the NFL’s 2010 All-Decade team.

Smith signed an eight-year, almost $100 million contract extension with the Cowboys in 2016, but he hasn’t participated in a full season since 2015. Prior to the 2022 season, he had a hamstring tear, which kept him out of the game save for four. Last season, he struggled with a number of knee, back, and neck problems.

Reports: LT Tyron Smith likely to leave the Cowboys in free agency

The team’s selection of Tyler Smith in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft could herald the end of the Tyron Smith era and the ascent of Tyler Smith. The 22-year-old has started at offensive guard in all but three of the previous two seasons. Tyler Smith might switch to left tackle once Tyron Smith’s contract expires.
