Coventry City favourite swiftly completes transfer following heartfelt farewell

Don't be overawed by Wembley, says Liam Kelly as Coventry aim for Premier League | The Independent

Coventry City transfer latest as Liam Kelly, who left the club after seven years this summer, signs for League One Rotherham United

Former Coventry City midfielder Liam Kelly has joined Rotherham United, a team aiming for promotion in League One, following the conclusion of his seven-year tenure at the CBS Arena. The 34-year-old has committed to a two-year deal at the New York Stadium.

During his time with the Sky Blues, Kelly made 180 appearances, contributing to the team’s promotions from League Two and League One. He nearly helped Coventry secure promotion to the Premier League in 2023, only falling short in a penalty shoot-out.

Kelly was a key player under manager Mark Robins as the club ascended the EFL ranks. However, in recent seasons, he saw less playing time as Robins continually strengthened the squad to compete in the Championship.

Kelly is now the seventh addition to Steve Evans’ squad in what has been a busy summer for Rotherham, following the signings of Jonson Clarke-Harris, Sean Raggett, Joe Rafferty, and Reece James.

Kelly’s departure from Coventry coincides with the exits of Simon Moore, Dermi Lusala, and Bradley Stretton, whose contracts also ended. Meanwhile, Luis Binks has returned to his parent club, and new deals have been offered to Luke Bell and Callum O’Hare.

Upon confirming his departure from the Sky Blues, Kelly remarked, “The timing is right. At 34, with the club investing in new players and aiming for the Premier League, it’s clear they’re on that path, and I’m confident they’ll eventually succeed. I’m excited to move on this summer and pursue new goals.

“You can’t stay at a club forever, no matter how much you might want to. I’ve enjoyed my time here immensely. Everyone at the training ground and within the building has contributed to our successes. We wouldn’t have achieved what we did without the players and staff. Each person played a role in helping me and the club reach our current standing.”
