Brought on board by Brent Venables in 2022 to oversee the University of Oklahoma’s special teams, Jay Nunez, a former special teams analyst, is set to apply his expertise in Tuscaloosa after his tenure in Norman. Although the Sooners’ special teams began on a positive note under Nunez’s management, their performance leveled off in the previous year.

Jay Nunez, hailing from Alva, Oklahoma, and with a diverse five-year stint in various roles at Eastern Michigan before joining Oklahoma in 2022, has been identified as the upcoming special teams coordinator at the University of Alabama. This revelation comes from OU Insider’s Parker Thune, who shared the news via a Monday night tweet, relying on undisclosed sources.

During his time at Oklahoma, Nunez assumed responsibility for overseeing every practice special team, a role that did not extend to game days due to his position as an analyst. Head coach Brent Venables addressed this limitation by assigning an on-field assistant coach to each special teams unit.

Nunez’s professional trajectory within the Oklahoma program saw a notable elevation before the commencement of the 2023 season. Starting as a senior student program coordinator, he ascended to the position of special teams analyst, accompanied by a substantial salary increase from $110,000 to $250,000.

However, despite Nunez’s contributions, the Sooners’ special teams faced challenges in the 2023 season. Ranking sixth in net kickoff return yards, tenth in punt return yards, eleventh in field goal percentage, and ninth in net punting within the Big 12, their overall performance indicated room for improvement. Nunez’s move to the University of Alabama signals a fresh opportunity for him to apply his skills and contribute to the success of the Crimson Tide’s special teams, potentially bringing a renewed vigor and strategic approach to the field.
