The Washington Commanders have released kicker Brandon McManus following accusations of sexual assault detailed in a recent lawsuit. The team’s announcement came on Sunday, shortly after ESPN reported that two women had filed a lawsuit against McManus for incidents that allegedly occurred during his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The accusations pertain to a team flight to London during the 2023 season, where the women claim McManus inappropriately “grinded” on them and that the team failed to supervise him and ensure a safe environment for the flight staff.

In response to the allegations, McManus’ attorney, Brett R. Gallaway, issued a statement to ESPN on Monday, vehemently denying the claims. He described the allegations as “fictitious and demonstrably false,” asserting that they are part of a defamation campaign against McManus, a well-respected NFL player. Gallaway emphasized their intention to vigorously defend McManus’ reputation and prove the claims to be an extortion attempt.

A spokesperson for the Commanders confirmed to USA TODAY Sports that the team was aware of the lawsuit and was investigating the matter. The team has been in communication with both the NFL and McManus’ legal representatives regarding the situation.

McManus, who joined the Jaguars for the 2023 season after nine years with the Denver Broncos, had a notable career highlight with a Super Bowl 50 victory. During the previous season, he successfully completed 30 out of 37 field goal attempts and all 35 extra point attempts. In March, McManus signed a one-year contract worth $3.6 million with the Commanders.
