Liam Lawson “should be in F1 this year” says long-term backer - Formula Scout

Liam Lawson has been a member of the Red Bull driver lineup for a significant period, but his 2024 F1 season did not begin as expected. Initially aiming to secure a spot at Red Bull for 2025, this goal now appears less attainable. His current position within the team is also under threat due to the presence of the Red Bull reserve driver. Lawson stepped in for Daniel Ricciardo in five races last year, impressing everyone with his performance after Ricciardo suffered a wrist injury.

Christian Horner, the Red Bull team principal, praised Lawson when discussing the team’s second seat. Despite his strong performance last year, where he scored two points in five races for AlphaTauri (RB’s sister team), the recent confirmation of Ricciardo’s seat for the 2025 season leaves only Ricciardo’s seat as a potential opportunity for Lawson. This season is crucial for Ricciardo; his performance will determine if he retains his place or if it will be given to Lawson next year.

Although Lawson is a strong contender for a Red Bull F1 seat in 2025, Horner emphasized that the Red Bull group is not rushing to make a decision. They plan to carefully evaluate all options before finalizing their lineup. So far this year, Ricciardo has accumulated nine points, but the 2025 driver market has proven to be highly unpredictable, with rapid changes occurring.

Additionally, Lawson’s contract includes a clause that allows him to leave the Red Bull driver lineup if he is not granted a seat next year. Given all these factors, the competition for the second seat at Red Bull will undoubtedly intensify.

In summary, while Lawson has demonstrated significant potential and has been recognized for his strong performances, the uncertainty surrounding Ricciardo’s contract and the competitive nature of the driver market mean that the battle for the second seat at Red Bull will be fierce. Red Bull will take a strategic and measured approach in making their final decision.
