The Chicago Cubs are narrowing down their options for the third baseman position in the upcoming season, with two primary contenders emerging.

At the onset of the offseason, the Cubs had an extensive wish list that included several players. However, many of those players ended up joining other teams, prompting the front office to explore alternative options for bolstering the roster.

While the team successfully addressed pitching needs through signings and trades, questions persist about the lineup and fielding positions. Christopher Morel’s ability to handle the full-time third baseman role remains uncertain due to defensive struggles. As a potential solution, Chicago may consider utilizing Morel as the designated hitter to keep his bat in the lineup.

Matt Chapman was initially considered a strong candidate to fulfill the third baseman role due to his elite defensive skills, multiple Gold Gloves, and above-average hitting with power. However, negotiations on this front have yet to materialize, and it appears the Cubs are allowing other teams to pursue Chapman.

As a result, the competition for the starting third baseman position on Opening Day narrows down to Patrick Wisdom and Nick Madrigal. Wisdom, who saw reduced playing time last season after 105 games at third in 2022, faces challenges due to a declining fielding percentage, aligning with the Cubs’ emphasis on infield defense.

On the defensive front, Madrigal stands out, offering superior skills. However, his offensive production, reflected in a slash line of .263/.311/.352 with two home runs and 28 RBI, lacks the power that Chicago seeks in its lineup.

While Morel will have an opportunity to showcase his abilities at third base, Manager Craig Counsell has expressed the team’s view of him as a versatile player capable of contributing across multiple roles.

As Spring Training approaches, the likely scenario is that either Wisdom or Madrigal will be entrusted with manning the hot corner for the Cubs on Opening Day.
