Chicago Cubs slugger Christopher Morel is concentrating on third base this winter after first being encouraged to learn how to play first base.

Standout player Christopher Morel of the Chicago Cubs has yet another new idea as position players prepare to report to spring training.

Morel is now working at third base in an attempt to secure a regular spot, having been informed at the beginning of the offseason that he would concentrate on first base.

The Cubs are pushing Morel to third base because they need his bat more at first base now that they have acquired Michael Busch this winter. Still, they are eager to get Morel’s bat in the lineup.

Per Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times:

Craig Counsell said he’d like to see Christopher Morel at third base to start camp. “Christopher’s done so much with the bat, that it’s our job to figure out the best way to deploy it.” He left open the possibility of that changing but wants to give Morel consistency at the onset

Morel is expected to play a significant role in the Cubs’ offence, particularly in the event that Cody Bellinger’s productivity in free agency is formally lost. Bellinger hasn’t signed yet, so he might still be able to come back, but if not, replacing him will require teamwork.

If Morel does play third base more frequently, Nick Madrigal’s playing time will probably be reduced and Busch will be able to earn more time at first.

In 2023, Morel, then 24 years old, hit 26 home runs for the Northsiders. He hit.247 and drove in 70 runs.

The Cubs finished 83-79 last season and were second in the National League Central.
