‘Champion mindset’: UFC legend’s ‘inspiring’ visit motivating Bulldogs

Rarely does one of the most renowned UFC fighters of all time grace an NRL training facility, but the Canterbury Bulldogs were treated to the complete Jon Jones encounter before their pivotal 2024 season.

The current heavyweight champion and former light-heavyweight titleholder has showcased dominance inside the octagon throughout his illustrious MMA journey. However, during a visit to Belmore Oval on Friday, Jones swapped his gloves for a Steeden.

The 36-year-old engaged with the spirited Canterbury squad during a pre-season training session, putting his rugby league abilities to the test while observing the NRL stars in action.

However, it was the intimate discussion he had with the Bulldogs players that left the most significant impression, as Jones offered a rare glimpse into the factors contributing to his success.

“It was an incredibly enjoyable experience – one that I’ll remember for a long time,” he expressed to 9News Sydney.

“Perhaps the most impactful aspect was the Q&A session, where I had the opportunity to share insights into the mindset of a champion athlete.”

Jones (29-1-1) is widely revered as an icon in the sport and holds the distinction of being a rare two-division titleholder with the UFC, most recently securing the heavyweight championship by defeating Ciryl Gane.

Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo sees Jon Jones’ visit to training as a motivating factor for the team following a series of disappointing seasons.

“Our focus right now is on intense training, and physically, we’re in excellent shape,” he explained to 9News Sydney. “But mentally, that’s where the real challenge lies. The insight our players gained from listening to him today will undoubtedly benefit them.”

Josh Addo-Carr was thrilled to have Jon Jones around, likening the experience to being a kid in a candy store. He hopes the mentoring session will contribute to further growth in his already remarkable career.

“I managed to get some items signed, which I plan to raffle off… Well, actually, they’re going straight into the mancave,” he informed 9News Sydney.

“It’s an aspect I haven’t focused on much before, the mental side of things. His insights today really reinforced that for me, so I’m determined to strive for greatness.”

Canterbury will commence their NRL season against the Eels on March 9th.
