Melbourne is gearing up for a thrilling rugby event in July 2025, as the British & Irish Lions take on the Wallabies at the MCG. This highly anticipated match, part of a three-Test Series, is expected to draw tens of thousands of fans from across the globe, providing a significant boost to the local economy.

Tickets for the event are now on sale, with Minister for Tourism, Sport, and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos highlighting Melbourne’s reputation as a premier host for global sporting events. This tour is particularly special as the British & Irish Lions only visit Australia every 12 years, making it a rare and exciting opportunity for rugby enthusiasts.

The British & Irish Lions, comprised of top players from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, have a rich history dating back to 1888. Their last tour to Australia in 2013 ended with a 2-1 series win over the Wallabies, adding to the anticipation for their return.

The match at the MCG is expected to be a highlight of Victoria’s sporting calendar in 2025, alongside other major events like the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the AFL Grand Final. Rugby Australia CEO Phil Waugh expressed confidence in Melbourne’s enthusiasm for the event, recalling the Wallabies’ last victory against the Lions in Melbourne.
