Commencing on February 4, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation will host a screening of ‘Beyond Their Years: The Incredible Legacies of Herb Carnegie and Buck O’Neil’ at Carnegie of Homestead Music Hall. This documentary highlights the stories of Herb Carnegie and Buck O’Neil, emphasizing their roles as advocates for greater inclusivity in the sports realm. The event, taking place at 2 p.m. following doors opening at 1:30 p.m., aims to engage the community in reflecting on the historical impact of these influential figures.
The focal point of the Penguins’ Black History Month celebrations is the Black History Game on February 6, where they will face off against the Winnipeg Jets at PPG Paints Arena, with the game commencing at 7 p.m. This matchup serves as an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge Black leaders in Pittsburgh. The arena will feature informational tables providing insights into organizations dedicated to promoting Black excellence and supporting the local Black community. It’s an initiative to spotlight and honor the achievements and positive influence of Black leaders in the region.
Adding to the commemoration, Lyndsey Smith is scheduled to perform the national anthem before the game, contributing to the overall ambiance of the event. During the first intermission break, members of the Mt. Ararat Baptist Church Choir will present the Black National Anthem, enhancing the cultural significance of the occasion.
In a demonstration of community engagement and support, the Penguins plan to conduct an auction featuring special jerseys, pucks, and locker room nameplates used during the Black History Game.
