At the start of training camp, the San Francisco 49ers stated they had no plans to trade Brandon Aiyuk.
However, it seems like the focus of debate has switched to the talented wide receiver, and the Patriots of New England may be mentioned in that conversation.
The Patriots and Cleveland Browns are reportedly the “front-runners” in trade talks for Aiyuk, according to Cam Marino of NFLDraftBuzz.com, who also suggested that both clubs are willing to give Aiyuk more than $30 million annually on a new contract. Then, on Sunday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area revealed that he believes a deal for Aiyuk is a genuine possibility. He also explained why he believes Cleveland and New England would make sense as trading partners.
Why is there so much excitement about a possible Aiyuk trade now? According to Maiocco, it has taken “longer than expected” for the All-Pro wide receiver, who is currently scheduled to make $14.1 million in the final year of his rookie contract, to negotiate a new agreement with San Francisco, despite indications that last month’s talks appeared to be near to completion.
Aiyuk’s price may be rising because a number of elite receivers, like Tyreek Hill, who has the highest guaranteed salary of any receiver ever at $106.5 million, have also just signed new or renegotiate contracts.
