The Detroit Lions are entering an exciting phase of their rebuilding process, with a promising 2023 season that demonstrated their potential. However, to truly elevate themselves into perennial playoff contenders and potentially Super Bowl contenders, they must address key areas during the offseason. Here’s a look at the moves that could put the Lions over the top.
1. Upgrade the Defensive Line
While the Lions’ defense showed improvement, they still need to bolster their pass rush. Adding a proven edge rusher, or possibly even a dominant defensive tackle, would make a significant impact. A player like Javon Hargrave or another high-profile free agent would help Detroit’s defensive line create more pressure and disrupt opposing quarterbacks.
2. Solidify the Secondary
Detroit’s secondary struggled at times in 2023, particularly with consistency. A high-caliber cornerback, possibly through free agency or the draft, would give them a true shutdown presence. Pairing a dynamic cornerback with Jeff Okudah and Jerry Jacobs could make this secondary a real strength.
3. Improve the Wide Receiver Corps
While Amon-Ra St. Brown is a legitimate star, the Lions could use a more reliable second option in the passing game. Adding another wide receiver who can stretch the field and create mismatches would give Jared Goff more weapons to work with. A player like DeAndre Hopkins or even drafting a wide receiver with high upside could be crucial.
4. Strengthen the Offensive Line Depth
The Lions’ offensive line is already one of the league’s best, but depth remains a concern. A solid backup or potential starter could help ensure that the unit remains elite even with injuries or rotations.
With these strategic moves, the Lions can improve on both sides of the ball and truly contend for the NFC North title and beyond.
