At the outset of the winter, the St. Louis Cardinals advertised a reset in their player development principles which they believed was necessary to correct their wayward course and re-establish the organization as one of baseball’s preeminent player development apparatuses. Part of that reset required the construction of new staff infrastructure, and three new hires announced on Wednesday are at the center of that strategy.
Larry Day was named director of player development, Carl Kochan was named director of performance and Matt Pierpoint was named director of pitching, the team said in a release. The trio of new hires will act as department heads under new assistant general manager Rob Cerfolio, whose hiring was announced in October as assistant general manager of player development & performance.
“Finding the right leadership, first of all, getting those folks in their positions and set up, and really helping me as we go forward and make investments is going to be really important,” incoming president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom said at the team’s end of season press conference. “We’re going to have new ideas come into the organization and really figure out, in all areas, how we can make this as good as it can be.”
