While there are several big name quarterback prospects headlining the 2025 NFL draft, one guy not mentioned as frequently is Texas Longhorns passer Quinn Ewers. However, a recent prediction has him landing with a team that could see him immediately be put in a unique position. Ewers is fresh off a strong campaign in 2024, as he threw for 3,472 yards and 31 touchdowns to lead Texas to the College Football Playoff semifinal. Despite that, Ewers isn’t expected to be selected on the first day of the draft, with draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN explaining why he believes that’s the case.
“The days of being okay with a single, double are over, just about,” Kiper said. “‘Surround the quarterback by everything and we got a pretty good shot.’ They don’t want that. That’s where Quinn kind of falls in to maybe 10, 15, 20 years ago, when you’re okay with a single, double. Fine. I don’t view him as a grand slam, home run and I think that’s what’s going to push him down just a little bit.”
And yet, while Ewers’ draft stock may be as high as other quarterbacks, he still has the upside to become a starting quarterback in the NFL. That led Luke Easterling of Athlon Sports to recently predict that Ewers would land with the New Orleans Saints as a potential replacement for Derek Carr. The Saints recently restructured Carr’s contract in order to free up over $30 million in cap space, but before that, he was open to potentially exploring the open market. For now, the two sides are on the same page, but they could view Ewers as someone who could push Carr immediately, while also eventually becoming their QB of the future.
Perhaps making this avenue even more enticing for New Orleans is that Easterling has them landing Ewers in the fourth round of the draft with the No. 112 pick. The 2025 NFL draft is set to get underway on Thursday, April 24 at 8 p.m. EDT.
