The Philadelphia Phillies acquired right-handed pitcher Devin Sweet from the Detroit Tiger for cash considerations on Tuesday.
Sweet, 28, was added to the Phillies’ 40-man roster and will aim to bolster their bullpen for the 2025 season.
A North Carolina native, Sweet has been in the Tigers’ minor league system since 2018 and played the majority of the 2024 season with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens.
In 52 games, including four starts, Sweet posted a 9-6 record with a 3.91 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. His major league stint in 2023 was brief, as he made seven appearances and recorded a 10.38 ERA over 8.2 innings, striking out six batters.
The Phillies are looking for reinforcements in their bullpen, which was the worst among playoff teams in 2024, posting an 11.37 ERA and 2.13 WHIP.
Despite their bullpen struggles, the Phillies still managed to secure 37 saves, ranking sixth-fewest in the league.
Sweet will attempt to carve out a role for himself in this high-leverage environment and help improve the team’s overall relief performance.
he 2024 regular season saw the Phillies’ bullpen finish with a 3.94 ERA, and Sweet’s addition aims to bolster this unit heading into 2025, as the team looks to build on their postseason success and strengthen their chances for future playoff contention.
