The Current, Kansas City’s NWSL team, plays in a $117 million stadium and has achieved sell-out crowds for all home games this season. As the No. 4 seed entering the NWSL playoffs on November 9, the team has lost only three matches throughout the season. Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, a former soccer player, frequently attend Current and Sporting KC games. Recently, Mahomes was seen at Kauffman Stadium supporting the Royals during their playoff run.

Reflecting on his sports journey, Mahomes stated, “I know how much sports has given to me. Whenever I’m done with football… I want to still be a part of it.” He expressed hopes for a WNBA team in Kansas City, aiming to inspire his daughter and others to pursue their dreams.

The WNBA plans to expand by three teams over the next two seasons, adding Golden State, Portland, and Toronto, which would bring the league total to 15 teams. League commissioner Cathy Engelbert has indicated that a 16th team may be added by the 2028 season, but Kansas City will face competition from cities like St. Louis and Philadelphia in this endeavor.

The league’s popularity has surged, driven by emerging stars like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, resulting in the best attendance numbers in 22 years this past season.
