Newcastle great Kurt Gidley has issued a warning to rival NRL clubs that Knights captain and former Dally M winner Kalyn Ponga looks primed to take his game to a whole new level in 2025. And the club legend has weighed in on who he thinks should play in the halves for the Knights this season, after coach Adam O’Brien struggled to settle on his preferred five-eighth and halfback in 2024.
The Knights snuck into the finals last year after beating the Dolphins in the final game of the regular season to leapfrog the Raiders into eighth spot on points differential. It was the third straight win for Newcastle and largely came off the back of Ponga’s incredible late-season form, although the marquee man was powerless to stop his side exiting the finals in week one after losing to the Cowboys.
