Frankie Muniz, a driver for Ford Performance NASCAR Xfinity and the Craftsman Truck Series, will compete in the Mustang Challenge this weekend at Circuit of The Americas.
Top drivers have the opportunity to compete in elite contests using a variety of Mustang models thanks to Ford Performance’s global racing program.
Fans have witnessed drivers like IMSA standout Joey Hand and Australian Supercars veteran Cam Waters compete in NASCAR Cup Series single-event races in 2024.
Now, during the FIA World Endurance Championship Lone Star Le Mans weekend, Muniz, a rising star in NASCAR, will drive the Mustang Dark Horse R in Mustang Challenge.
“Since I participated in the Mustang Dark Horse R launch, my only goal has been to compete in the Mustang Challenge,” Muniz stated. You can be sure that the first races of the year will be exciting and competitive with a full field.
“When I got the chance to drive the Dark Horse R at COTA, I was ecstatic. I’m eager to try a new course and series with the Dark Horse R because this is one of the few road courses where I haven’t competed yet.
In February 2023, Muniz made his NASCAR racing debut at Daytona International Speedway with Ford, rekindling his love for motorsports.
Since then, he has advanced through the ranks thanks to his relentless pursuit and skillful racing, sharing a seat this season in both the Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series and the ARCA Menards Series.
Muniz began his racing career in open-wheel competitions before moving into the NASCAR ranks. Interestingly, from 2007 to 2009, he competed in the ChampCar Atlantic Championship.
“My goal as a driver is to gain as much experience as possible in any field, and Ford Performance has given me that chance,” he remarked.
“I’ve traveled with NASCAR, but this is an even better chance to compete in a major series. I envision us participating in more races of this nature in the future.
Muniz is one of 13 cars entered in the Dark Horse class, which is presently led by Tyler Gonzalez of Robert Noaker Racing, and he will race the No. 3 Mustang Dark Horse R for Spark Performance.
Meanwhile, fourteen cars competing in the 45+ division of Dark Horse Legends are scheduled to do combat. There are just four races remaining, and Zachry Lee is leading the points lead.
The Ford Performance YouTube channel will host a live webcast of the Mustang Challenge, during which Muniz will commentate with John Hindhaugh in the broadcast booth on Sunday’s event.
The races will also be shown live on Peacock and IMSA.tv. They are scheduled for Saturday at 4:40 p.m. CDT and Sunday at 8:40 a.m. CDT.
