Max Verstappen may have one hand on the Formula 1 drivers’ title but Lando Norris insists McLaren does not see Red Bull as a threat.
The Briton’s chances of blowing the championship race wide open evaporated in Brazil three weeks ago, as the Dutchman secured his first Grand Prix victory since June 23 despite starting 17th.
Norris could only finish sixth and now trails his rival by 62 points with three races remaining in the season.
But while Verstappen will make it four consecutive world titles by finishing in the top two in Las Vegas this weekend, McLaren remains in pole position to secure a first constructors’ crown in 26 years.
The Papaya last finished top of the constructors’ standings in 1998, when Mika Hakkinen won the first of his two consecutive drivers’ titles.
McLaren leads Ferrari by 36 points going into the final three races of the year, with Red Bull 13 points further adrift.
And Norris has all but ruled out the prospect of the latter making a comeback to retain the title it has won for the past two seasons.
“After Miami, I already said back then our challenge is not with Red Bull, it’s with Ferrari,” Norris told British broadcaster Sky Sports on Tuesday.
