The Seminoles have secured a former top-100 prospect out of the transfer portal.

Since head coach Mike Norvell moved to Tallahassee, Florida State has regularly expanded its roster through the NCAA Transfer Portal. Since the programme has drawn in more than ten players via the site in each of the previous five recruiting cycles, the Seminoles have actually added more transfers than any other team in the nation.

This also applies to the class of 2024, as FSU has had a busy year since the year began. While the Tallahassee staff remains in place, the Seminoles are gaining significant momentum and have benefited from coaching changes across the nation.

The streak continued on Monday night when former Alabama linebacker Shawn Murphy declared his intention to attend Florida State. Shortly after he logged into the portal on Saturday, the decision was made. In the process, he only made one school visit, to the Seminoles.

After Nick Saban retired, Murphy played for the Crimson Tide for two years before deciding to consider his alternatives. This past season, he made 13 appearances, most of them as a special teams player. Murphy played 11 special teams snaps in Alabama’s Rose Bowl defeat by Michigan. He totaled three tackles by the end of the season.

Murphy played in eighteen games for Tuscaloosa, recording five tackles and one pass deflection. He visited Florida State in June 2021 and was considered one of the top recruits in the 2022 class. The following month, Murphy pledged his allegiance to the Crimson Tide. As a senior, he amassed 113 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, six sacks, and two interceptions. He also won the 2021 Butkus Award and was named an Under Armour All-American.

In the 2022 class, 247Sports ranked the 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker as the No. 72 overall talent, the No. 6 LB, and the No. 2 recruit in the state of Virginia.

Murphy joins a group of players that includes redshirt senior DJ Lundy, redshirt sophomores Omar Graham Jr. and Blake Nichelson, sophomores Justin Cryer and Jayden Parrish, and true freshman Timir Hickman-Collins at Florida State.

Since December, Murphy has become the Seminoles’ fourteenth transfer. Over the past few weeks, the programme has added former Georgia defensive end Marvin Jones Jr., former Oregon State/Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, former LSU wide receiver Jalen Brown, former Alabama cornerback Earl Little Jr., former Colorado State defensive tackle Grady Kelly, former Indiana running back Jaylin Lucas, former Miami defensive back Davonte Brown, former Alabama wide receiver Malik Benson, former West Virginia defensive end Tomiwa Durojaiye, former Oregon State defensive end Sione Lolohea, former Alabama offensive lineman Terrence Ferguson II, former Alabama running back Roydell Williams, and former Florida offensive lineman Richie Leonard IV
