Fletcher Cox, the most accomplished defensive tackle in the team’s history, has announced his retirement from the Philadelphia Eagles.
After spending 12 seasons in Philadelphia, where he helped the club win Super Bowl LII, the 33-year-old announced his retirement.
This occurs as the Eagles must find an offensive lineman to replace Jason Kelce, who announced his retirement last week.
In a lengthy statement, Cox wrote, “Eagles fans, April 26, 2012 was a special day that changed my life forever when Andy Reid called me to say I would be drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles.”

A lifelong ambition came true for me when I was able to join the NFL. However, I was unaware at the time of the immense pleasure and distinction that would come with representing the Eagles organization and the city of Philadelphia for the ensuing 12 seasons.

‘To Eagles supporters everywhere – there is not a fan base in all of sports that is as passionate as you,’ he said, praising the offensive line, coaches, senior leadership, and even his parents.
“Your intensity and demands are a result of your deep concern for others.” I wouldn’t have wanted to have spent my career somewhere else.

I will always remember the exhilaration I had as I ran out of Lincoln Financial Field’s tunnel and the thunderous applause I received after making a huge play.

“Holding that Lombardi Trophy at the Rocky Steps and staring out into the sea of fans was one of the proudest moments of my life.” Realizing what we had accomplished and how much it meant to so many people was astounding.

Few athletes in Yazoo City, Mississippi, have the opportunity to compete professionally, much less pursue dreams of winning a world championship.

I’m honored to speak on behalf of Mississippi State University, my community, and the state of Mississippi. However, Philadelphia will always have a particular place in my heart as it has been my home for the past 12 years.

“After giving it some thought, I have decided to give up playing football.” I offered this team and this city everything I had. I’m not sure what lies ahead for me, but I do know that I will always be appreciative of my time spent in Philadelphia and working with the Eagles. Go, Eagles!
“What made Fletcher truly special is that his influence extends even further behind the scenes,” stated Eagles chairman Jeffrey Lurie, among other things. The six-time team captain had a significant role in our building’s championship culture establishment.
