The Kansas City Chiefs are headed to the Super Bowl after a 32-29 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC title game. Once again, the win didn’t come without controversy. A number of questionable calls were made during the game, including a fourth-and-one where quarterback Josh Allen was called short and a catch from Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy was ruled a reception despite the ball contacting the ground. While both plays could have gone either way, the calls ended up benefitting the Chiefs, adding to the fan complaints that the officials “help” the Chiefs win games. Shooting down that narrative was the legendary voice of the Chiefs, Mitch Holthus, who pointed out the number of scoring drives that were aided by penalties during the regular season.
“We can stay with false narratives or discuss this: Kansas City was 17th in percentage of scoring drives that were aided by a penalty for a first down. On such drives in regular season number one? Wait for it…Buffalo 33% of scoring drives were aided by penalty for a first down on 86 scoring drives,” Holthus said. Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, shared the message on social media, sending a clear message regarding the officiating complaints.
