The BC Lions made significant roster moves on Monday, parting ways with eight players including running back Taquan Mizzell as they gear up for the upcoming regular season.

Mizzell, aged 30, served as the primary running back for the Lions in 2023, featuring in 14 games and standing out with 157 rushing attempts and 773 yards on the ground, a considerable contribution to the team’s offensive efforts. Additionally, he showcased versatility by catching 41 passes for 291 yards and tallying five touchdowns throughout the season.

Hailing from Virginia Beach, Virginia, Mizzell had a notable collegiate career at the University of Virginia before venturing into the professional realm. He spent five years within various NFL organizations including the Baltimore Ravens, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, and New York Giants, prior to joining the Lions on April 18, 2022.

His debut season with the Lions was marked by a standout performance in a crucial game against the Edmonton Elks, where his stellar play helped secure a playoff berth for the team. Despite his impactful contributions, the Lions have opted to move forward with William Stanback as their lead running back. Aside from Mizzell, the Lions also bid farewell to linebackers Joe Beckett and KeSean Brown, defensive backs Tyon Davis and Jassin States-McClean, wide receivers Taylor Grimes and Mataio Talalemotu, and quarterback Dakota Prukop.

The Lions are now focused on their upcoming regular-season opener against the Toronto Argonauts scheduled for June 9 in Toronto. With these roster adjustments, the team aims to solidify its lineup and pursue success in the forthcoming campaign.
