Breaking: Juan Pablo Montoya is set to make his return to NASCAR for its second playoff race, driving the No. 50

There will be a new, but familiar face behind the wheel when the NASCAR Cup Series returns to Watkins Glen International on September 15.

Juan Pablo Montoya is set to make his return to NASCAR for its second playoff race, driving the No. 50 Mobil 1 Toyota car, a celebratory nod to Mobil 1’s 50th anniversary.

The 48-year-old Montoya hasn’t competed in the Cup Series since 2014 when he was a member of Team Penske.

After teasing the announcement on social media on Thursday, 23XI Racing, co-owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, made it official on Friday, August 2.

“I’m excited for the opportunity and I think we’re going to be pretty well prepared,” Montoya said in the video.

“I want to do it and I think I can be quite competitive at it. … I think I’ve done enough laps around Watkins Glen and everything that it should be pretty good.”

In addition to two career Cup Series wins, Montoya also boasts a NASCAR Xfinity Series win, 7 Formula One wins and 15 IndyCar victories.
