The 2024 recruiting class that features one of Arkansas football’s jewels won’t play a down for the Razorbacks.

Ashton Bethel-Roman, a wide receiver, has been freed from his national letter of intent and plans to join with a different university, according to an Arkansas representative. The choice is made at the same time that Wisconsin recruited Arkansas’s wide receivers coach Kenny Guiton earlier in the offseason.

According to 247sports, Bethel-Roman was the third-ranked recruit in the Arkansas class. Bethel-Roman is ranked No. 210th overall and No. 35th among wide receivers in the nation.

Bethel-Roman opted for Arkansas over Texas Tech, Texas A&M, and Oregon. The product of Missouri City, Texas, committed to Arkansas in July, but on Signing Day in December, he came dangerously close to switching to the Aggies.

Krosse Johnson, a three-star prospect from New Orleans who Arkansas did not recruit until the week of National Signing Day, is currently the only high school wide receiver in Arkansas’ 2024 class.

“Obviously, nobody knew about Krosse Johnson. I didn’t either until about 3-4 days ago when we felt like we may lose a receiver,” Pittman said on Dec. 20. “We needed another high school receiver, we needed speed.”

Arkansas has no shortage of receivers on the roster with Andrew Armstrong, Isaac TeSlaa and Tyrone Broden all returning in 2024, but there is a lack of high-ceiling underclassmen on the roster. Two receivers who were freshmen in 2023 — Davion Dozier and Dazmin James — will try to earn consistent playing time this fall.
