The Boston Bruins have made an investment in their future defensive lineup by recruiting a highly promising young defenseman from the college ranks. General Manager Don Sweeney announced on Tuesday that the team has successfully signed Drew Bavaro from Notre Dame.

However, Boston fans eager to see the towering defenseman in action will have to exercise patience, as Bavaro’s immediate destination is Providence of the AHL. He will join the team on an amateur tryout for the remainder of the current season. Bavaro’s contract with Boston is structured as a one-year, entry-level deal, with a cap hit of $867,500, scheduled to take effect next season. This contract marks a significant step forward for the right-shot defenseman.

Standing at an impressive 6-foot-3 and weighing 200 pounds, Bavaro brings physical presence to the ice. His collegiate career at Notre Dame showcased his capabilities, with 16 goals and 23 assists recorded over 72 games. Prior to his time at Notre Dame, Bavaro spent two seasons at Bentley University in Waltham, where he accumulated 11 goals and 28 assists in 52 games.

Despite hailing from Florida, Bavaro is intimately acquainted with the New England region. He attended both Cardigan Mount School in New Hampshire and Lawrence Academy, establishing strong ties to the area. Bavaro’s connection to New England extends to his hockey career as well, having played for the Neponset Valley River Rats during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. During his tenure with the River Rats, Bavaro showcased his skills, amassing 28 points, including 9 goals and 19 assists, across 54 games.

In joining the Providence Bruins for the remainder of the season, Bavaro aims to bolster the team’s defensive depth. Moreover, his presence in Providence sets the stage for potential advancement to the Boston Bruins in the years to come. As Bavaro continues to hone his skills and adapt to the professional level, he may well emerge as a valuable asset for the Bruins’ blue line, contributing to the team’s success in the future.
