On Tuesday, the Birmingham Stallions added quarterback Matt Corral and linebacker DeMarquis Gates to their roster, simultaneously parting ways with offensive tackle Cam Carter and running back Zaquandre White.

The Birmingham Stallions have strengthened their roster for the 2024 season with the signings of quarterback Matt Corral and linebacker DeMarquis Gates. The UFL announced these additions alongside the release of offensive tackle Cam Carter and running back Zaquandre White.

Corral is a familiar name from his standout college career at Ole Miss, where he amassed 8,281 passing yards and 57 touchdowns with 23 interceptions. His running ability was also notable, with 1,338 rushing yards and 18 scores. He earned a spot on the All-SEC team in 2021 and compiled a 17-10 record as the starting quarterback over three seasons.

He was drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers but missed the entire season due to a Lisfranc injury sustained in preseason. In 2023, he was cut by the Panthers at the end of training camp and then signed with the New England Patriots. However, he was placed on the exempt list approximately two weeks later for failing to report to the team facilities for two consecutive days, which resulted in him not playing for the team for the remainder of the year.

Gates spent the previous two NFL seasons with the Chicago Bears, earning his spot through his impressive performance with the Birmingham Stallions in 2022. During his time with the Stallions, he recorded 62 tackles and 6.5 sacks, contributing significantly to the team’s USFL championship win. Gates also played in the CFL, XFL, and AAF from 2019 to 2021.

Carter played for the New Jersey Generals last season, appearing in nine games. White was a part of the Stallions’ backfield, rushing for 128 yards and gaining 81 receiving yards, scoring three total touchdowns.

These roster changes are noteworthy, especially as the quarterback competition intensifies in Birmingham between Corral and J’Mar Smith for the starting role. Gates is expected to make an immediate impact on defense, potentially starting or serving as a rotational player alongside Scooby Wright in the linebacker corps.

The UFL’s training camp is scheduled to commence on February 23, with the Stallions kicking off their season against the Arlington Renegades on March 30.
