BIG BLOW: FRIARS KEY MAN HIT WITH INJURY, OUT OF THE SEASON

The school announced on Thursday that Providence’s standout forward, Bryce Hopkins, will miss the remainder of the season due to a ruptured ACL in his left knee.

Hopkins sustained the injury early in the second half of Seton Hall’s 61-57 defeat on Wednesday night. After Devin Carter made a transition pass, he fell awkwardly and sought for his leg right away, obviously in pain. Hopkins had assistance getting off the ground and into the changing area.

“In this trying time, we all feel sorry for Bryce and his family,” Providence head coach Kim English said in a statement. “We’ll be by his side every step of the way to ensure he recovers better than before. We kindly request that everyone in Friartown remember Bryce and his family and put him in prayers.

Since joining the Friars in the spring of 2022 after transferring from Kentucky, Hopkins, a 6-foot-7 junior, has been the best player for No. 23 Providence. Last season, he led Providence to the NCAA tournament and was named to the first team of the Big East with an average of 15.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.

Hopkins was leading the Friars to an unexpected start this season, scoring 15.5 points and 8.6 rebounds per game under first-year coach English. Prior to the game on Wednesday, they had defeated Wisconsin and Marquette to stand at 11-2.

In Hopkins’ absence, guards Corey Floyd and Garwey Dual will be called upon more frequently for Providence, and freshman Rich Barron may also get more playing time.

On Saturday, the Friars head to Creighton.
