Using the Transfer Portal, Jay Johnson once again raised his recruiting flag and signed the Alabama star.
With Paul Skenes, the top pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, leaving the team, Jay Johnson realized via the NCAA Transfer Portal that LSU needed a major pitcher.
When it came down to it, Johnson was concentrating on Luke Holman, the Alabama ace.
As soon as Holman reached the “free agency market,” Johnson and the Tigers called him, making him the most sought-after righty in the country.
Johnson made time to speak with Holman and gave him priority, even though LSU was still playing in Omaha at the time.
As he gets ready for his first season in Baton Rouge, Holman is now a Tiger.

As things heated up, Holman made quite a few visits to Tennessee and Mississippi State, which were formidable rivals for LSU in the recruiting game.
However, Johnson and the Tigers believed they would leave a lasting impact on Holman during his visit to campus, and they certainly did.
“There was a clear difference. Their National Championship was at stake, along with other things. I was at ease. It was quite cozy,” Holman remarked. It was fantastic, but the resources are great too—they are at all the schools. It’s wonderful to be in Baton Rouge.
In what many believe to be his last year of college, Holman felt at ease thanks to the visit, the coaching staff, and the culture.
A talent ranked highly on mock drafts for the MLB in 2024, he wanted to make sure he joined a winning culture.
The Jay Johnson Effect: Prioritizing Holman
Throughout the process, Holman received love from a few programs, but he needed some time to think things through and needed three official visits before making a selection.
In July, the highly regarded right-hand pitcher visited LSU, Mississippi State, and Tennessee.
Every stop had unique elements, but having a coach like Johnson at your disposal all the time established the tone.

During his official visit to Baton Rouge, Holman decided to spend an additional day there in order to get to know LSU two-way player Gavin Guidry. During their round together on the golf course, Guidry “dominated” the day.
There was a moment when the two could connect on a level other than baseball chatter, and Holman felt relieved. One aspect of the procedure that mattered a lot to him was that he felt at ease.
“[Gavin] is fantastic. He has incredible golf skills. “He can tell you everything about that, but I played pretty good until I played with him,” Holman remarked.
With the opportunity to make an instant impression in Baton Rouge, Holman now teams up with the defending National Champions. The ace pitcher is confident that he can succeed in the South and has always wanted to join a winning team.
“I wanted to improve the guys around me and I wanted to be on a good team,” Holman stated. “I want to play with people who will help me improve. The progress will occur, but for me, it was also really important to be pushed and to be a part of a team with many wonderful people.
