Back off and keep off, you can only be upset you can’t stop Oilers from getting what they want.

Houston Oilers Archives - The Atlanta Voice

Former Oilers quarterback Warren Moon recently weighed in on the Houston Texans’ unveiling of four new jerseys, including one with shades resembling the old Houston/Tennessee Oilers uniforms. Moon, a Hall of Famer, asserted that the Titans now own the legacy of the Oilers and their uniforms. He noted that the Titans consciously chose to forge their own identity when they moved from Houston, but now, due to the popularity of the Oilers’ uniforms, there’s a desire to reclaim them. Moon emphasized the impossibility of having it both ways, urging the Texans to embrace their unique identity.

Moon, who had a distinguished career with the Oilers, expressed confusion over the Texans’ decision to revisit the Oilers’ colors after almost three decades. He highlighted the success of the Texans as a team and encouraged them to focus on establishing their own identity rather than dwelling on past affiliations.

The Texans’ move to incorporate elements of the Oilers’ colors in their new jerseys has stirred controversy, particularly for Moon, who believes they should have stuck with their original identity. He suggested that the Texans’ fixation on the Oilers’ legacy may not be as significant if they weren’t competing in the same division as the Titans.

With upcoming games between the Texans and Titans in 2024, it remains to be seen whether either team will sport their Oilers-inspired jerseys during their matchups.
