Michael Carrick’s verdict after Middlesbrough’s 2-1 victory over Leicester City

As his Middlesbrough team overcomes the odds to secure a memorable 2-1 away victory against league leaders Leicester City, Michael Carrick called his players “incredible.”

Arriving after four games without a victory and without two very important players (Hayden Hackney and Jonny Howson) who were both sidelined by injury, Carrick was thrilled with the first of two important qualities. This was especially the case in the last five minutes, when Jamie Vardy cut the lead for Boro in half after coming off the bench, providing a tense conclusion.

The second major source of satisfaction for the Boro manager was the tactical awareness displayed by his team. Boro switched strategies against the Foxes after winning 1-0 at the Riverside earlier in the season. They were sharp on the counterattack, and goals from Finn Azaz and Sammy Silvera gave them a 2-0 lead at the break that complemented their devoted defensive effort.

Following the game, Carrick declared, “I’m thrilled with the outcome and performance.” Prior to the game, I could tell that the boys were aware of it strategically. Although the roles were different in some respects, I felt the lads were very motivated to complete the task at hand and demonstrated a strong sense of willpower to succeed in achieving their objectives.

It’s not a simple task. We’ve been hit hard lately, and we lost two more players to injuries this past week. Thus, I felt it was a fantastic performance and a fantastic display of energy. All I can say is that I’m glad the boys are having some success for once. They are deserving of it. They’re an amazing team to work with, and today they truly earned it.”
