As the Detroit Lions prepare for their Week 9 matchup against the Green Bay Packers, they are looking to solidify their lead in the NFC North with a 6-1 record. However, the absence of star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson, who is sidelined due to a tibia and fibula injury, poses a significant challenge. Hutchinson, a third-year defensive end, was having a standout season with 7.5 sacks before undergoing surgery that could keep him out until at least the Super Bowl, should the Lions advance.
To bolster their defensive line and maintain their competitive edge, Doug Farrar of The Athletic has proposed a trade for Za’Darius Smith from the struggling Cleveland Browns (2-6). Smith, a veteran with proven ability, could be a game-changing addition for Detroit. His skills would allow the Lions to apply pressure without relying heavily on blitzing, which has been necessary in Hutchinson’s absence. Under defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, the Lions have significantly increased their blitz rate to a league-high 46.1% in recent weeks, but this approach can strain the secondary and lead to vulnerabilities in coverage.
Acquiring Smith would provide the Lions with a robust alternative, enabling them to effectively rush the passer with four or five defenders while preserving the integrity of their coverage. This strategic adjustment could be crucial for a team aiming for a deep postseason run. With Hutchinson potentially returning for the playoffs, adding Smith could solidify the Lions’ defense and enhance their chances of contending for the NFC title. As the trade deadline approaches, securing a player of Smith’s caliber could prove pivotal for Detroit’s aspirations this season.
