As the Detroit Lions push forward in the 2024 NFL season, roster adjustments are inevitable. The team’s front office and coaching staff will make tough decisions by the end of October, especially with the trade deadline looming and the need to balance injuries, performance, and depth. Here are three players who might face the cut as the Lions refine their roster.
1.Julian Okwara – Defensive End
Julian Okwara, the younger brother of standout defensive end Romeo Okwara, has shown flashes of potential but has struggled to find consistency in the Lions’ defense. Drafted in the third round in 2020, Okwara’s athleticism and speed off the edge made him an intriguing prospect. However, his development has been hindered by injuries and inconsistent production. With the Lions focusing on building a dominant defensive front, Okwara’s inability to cement himself as a reliable pass rusher could lead to his departure. The emergence of younger players like Aidan Hutchinson and James Houston might make Okwara expendable.
2.Craig Reynolds – Running Back
Craig Reynolds has been a great story, going from an undrafted free agent to a contributor in the Lions’ backfield. His hard-nosed running style and ability to play special teams made him a valuable depth piece in previous seasons. However, with the Lions investing heavily in their running back corps through the acquisition of Jahmyr Gibbs and the resurgence of David Montgomery, Reynolds’ opportunities have been limited. His production has dipped this season, and with depth being a key factor in running back rotations, the Lions may prefer to allocate his roster spot to younger talent or a position of need, which could see Reynolds waived.
3.Will Harris – Cornerback
Will Harris has had a challenging tenure with the Lions. Drafted as a safety in 2019, he was converted to cornerback in 2022 to bolster the secondary. Though he brings versatility, Harris has struggled with coverage consistency and has been targeted by opposing quarterbacks. With the Lions adding young cornerbacks like Brian Branch and Cameron Sutton, alongside the return of Jeff Okudah from injury, Harris could be on the outside looking in. His versatility may give him a slight edge, but Detroit might opt to part ways in favor of developing younger, more dynamic talent in the secondary.
