The fact that Kyle Filipowski, a forward for Duke basketball, was not chosen in the first round of the NBA Draft in late June was one of the biggest surprises.
Though most publications had the 7-footer being selected in the top 30 picks in their final evaluations, other estimates had the All-American as a lottery pick early in the draft process.
That wasn’t the case for Filipowski, either, as the Utah Jazz took him with the 32nd overall choice. On Monday night, when the organization formally reached an agreement with the Duke basketball star, things even got more official.
In the past two years, Kyle Filipowski has inked the biggest deal for a second-round draft pick—a $12 million, four-year deal. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Filipowski is paid like a mid-20 draft pick in the first year of the contract.
Marks added that Filipowski’s contract was funded with the $3 million remaining in the team’s salary cap.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Jazz have a team option for the fourth year and the agreement is non-guaranteed for the third. It is completely guaranteed for the first two years.
After the Utah Jazz selected three players in the draft, Filipowski was the last to agree to a rookie contract.
Kyle Filipowski averaged 11.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.0 steals per game in 22.2 minutes per game at the NBA Salt Lake City and Las Vegas Summer Leagues. This includes his final game in Vegas, where he recorded 26 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
He led the Blue Devils in scoring with 16.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game in his sophomore campaign.
Although it will be intriguing to watch how much NBA playing time Kyle Filipowski receives this season, one thing is for sure: the Utah Jazz will give him every opportunity to establish his eligibility.
