BREAKING NEWS: UW Legend Kelsey Plum Honored with Jersey Retirement for Record-Breaking Achievements

SEATTLE — University of Washington’s athletic department has officially retired the jersey of former women’s basketball star Kelsey Plum, honoring her exceptional contributions to the program and the sport.

The ceremony, held at Alaska Airlines Arena, marked a historic moment in the school’s basketball history as Plum became the first player in the program’s history to have her jersey retired.

Kelsey Plum, a native of Poway, California, left an indelible mark on the University of Washington and NCAA women’s basketball with a career that included multiple records and accolades.

Her name is etched in the record books for her astonishing 3,527 points scored during her collegiate career, a record for both men’s and women’s NCAA basketball at the time.

Plum, who played for the Huskies from 2013 to 2017, also became the NCAA all-time leader in points per game and set numerous single-season and career records.

The jersey retirement ceremony featured an emotional tribute from former teammates, coaches, and supporters, as they celebrated Plum’s legendary career.

“Kelsey is not only one of the most talented players to ever step onto the court but also one of the most dedicated and hardworking athletes I’ve ever had the pleasure of coaching,” said Mike Neighbors, former head coach of the Washington women’s basketball team.

“Her determination and commitment set a standard for excellence that continues to inspire everyone who walks through these doors.”

During her time at UW, Plum led the Huskies to a Final Four appearance in 2016, forever changing the trajectory of the program.

Her leadership and scoring prowess helped elevate Washington to national prominence.

Plum’s impact wasn’t confined to the court alone—her work in the community and dedication to supporting youth basketball players also earned her respect off the court.

After a stellar college career, Plum was selected first overall in the 2017 WNBA Draft by the San Antonio Stars (now the Las Vegas Aces), where she has continued to shine.

She’s become a household name in the WNBA, earning multiple All-Star selections and contributing to the Aces’ recent championship success.

Plum’s jersey, number 10, will now hang alongside the greatest athletes in Washington’s storied athletic history.

Her retirement is a testament to the incredible journey of one of the most accomplished players in collegiate basketball history.

As she accepted the honor, an emotional Plum thanked the fans, her family, and her teammates for their unwavering support.

“This is such a special moment, and I am incredibly grateful for everything the University of Washington has given me. This place will always be home,” she said.

The Huskies’ legacy continues to grow, thanks in no small part to the trailblazing career of Kelsey Plum.
