Everyone is talking after rookie quarterback Bo Nix of the Denver Broncos put on an incredible show in his NFL preseason debut on Sunday. In a 34-3 triumph at Lucas Oil Stadium, the former Oregon Ducks signal-caller lit up the Indianapolis Colts on the road, throwing for 125 yards on 15/21 completions with a score and no picks.
Former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III was one of the people who was amazed by Nix’s astounding performance.
“Due to his ability to comprehend intricate schemes with ease and the QUICK RELEASE you see on this TD throw, Bo Nix was the most efficient quarterback in his draft class,” Griffin said on (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter).
“He demonstrated that in his preseason debut, going 15/21 for 125 yards with four scoring drives, as well as his inventiveness.”
That’s one recommendation for Nix from a person who understands what it takes to be successful in the NFL during his rookie season. As you may remember, Griffin made it to the Pro Bowl during his 2012 NFL rookie season. In addition, he was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Regarding Nix, his performance against the Colts strengthened his argument to be the starting quarterback for the Broncos in Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season. In the second quarter, he set up a 10-play drive that resulted in a one-yard touchdown pass to Mrvin Mims Jr., giving Denver the lead by seven points, 10-3. From then on, the Broncos did not look back, maintaining their advantage and winning the 2024 NFL preseason with a 1-0 record.
After Caleb Williams (Chicago Bears), Jayden Daniels (Washington Commanders), Drake Maye (New England Patriots), Michael Penix (Atlanta Falcons), and JJ McCarthy (Minnesota Vikings) were selected before the Broncos had a chance at the No. 12 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Nix was the final quarterback selected in the first round.
After spending his first three college seasons with the Auburn Tigers, Nix moved to Eugene to play for the Ducks for two seasons. Nix had an impressive career at Oregon, finishing with 8,101 throwing yards, 74 touchdowns, and a 74.9 percent completion percentage with just 10 interceptions.

There were moments for the other two quarterbacks in Denver. Zach Wilson threw for 117 yards on 10 of his 13 attempts, with no interceptions and no touchdowns. Jarrett Stidham played with little time on the field and completed 4/7 passes. Although Stidham’s stat line indicates an interception, Denver running back Samaje Perine’s inability to secure a short ball from Stidham led to a Kenny Moore pick for the Colts, not completely to Stidham’s fault.

It’s possible Nix and Stidham are the two quarterbacks left in the Broncos’ competition. After another preseason game next week, on August 11 at home against the Green Bay Packer, maybe a clearer image of who will start for Denver in September might become apparent.
August 25 at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, the Broncos will play their last preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Following that, Denver will have two weeks to finalize preparations for the 2024 NFL season, which begins on September 8 on the road against the Seattle Seahawks.
