According to Santi Aouna, Josh Doig has decided to transfer to Marseille after the Rangers target “refused all other proposals available to him.”

The Scottish left-back is only interested in the French team, who are in advanced talks with Hellas Verona, according to a Foot Mercato writer who broke the news via X on January 12.

While Ridvan Yilmaz is still going to Serie A, a £4.3 million deal to take the 21-year-old to Ligue 1 is on the cards and is set to be finalised on Friday night. Rangers had planned to lure Doig to Ibrox in a move that saw Yilmaz go in the opposite direction.

According to Aouna, Josh Doig accepted OM’s offer and turned down all other offers. All he wants is Marseille.

Not able to persuade

Yilmaz’s decision to travel to Verona without Doig visiting Glasgow may not have seemed wise, but it appears that no other option but to migrate to southern France could have persuaded him.

The cost of acquiring a left-back would have been high for the Light Blues to pay given that Philippe Clement appears to be prioritising strikers this month. However, if two players were going in either direction, a deal might have been made to postpone the expense until the summer.

Unless Clement and his team have another plan in place, there may be a case to terminate Yilmaz’s loan to Italy because the reciprocal aspect of the move appears to have failed.

There might have been some leeway if Doig had been open to returning to the SPFL and the clubs’ finances were the only thing standing in the way.

However, it seems that Rangers won’t be able to do anything to alter the former Hibs player’s decision if he has decided that Marseille is the only option.

Yilmaz’s exit will only make Borna Barisic’s future—which is also frequently questioned—more urgent. In any case, a long-term starter replacement for the 31-year-old Croatian is needed.

Since Calvin Bassey was sent to Ajax after he made headlines during Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s run to the Europa League final, the position has proven to be challenging, and this month it appears that it will be even more so.
