Prior to the start of the January transfer window, Sheffield Wednesday reportedly “identified” a major transfer target, per a report from dependable reporter Joe Crann.

Sheffield Wednesday form under Rohl

Before the season had even reached the halfway mark, there was a moment earlier in the season when a string of losses had left the Owls floating near the bottom of the standings, making their championship destiny all but certain.

With his current style of high-octane pressing football, 34-year-old Danny Rohl is perhaps one of the most intriguing young hires the club has made in a while. Thankfully, Rohl has made a lot of difference since taking over as manager.

Although there is still plenty to be done in the relegation battle, Wednesday has won three of their previous four Championship games, moving them up from the bottom. As a result, there is now legitimate optimism that a swift return to League One in May of next year may be averted.

Given the club’s present financial circumstances, further additions during the January transfer window may be on the to-do list in order for that to occur, depending on how much money is made available to Rohl. It appears that the Owls are considering a potential signing from the Premier League.

Sheffield Wednesday want James Beadle

Crann stated on X on Monday that Sheffield Wednesday is considering a transfer for James Beadle, the custodian for Brighton.

“Understand that Brighton custodian, James Beadle, is being considered as a potential target for #SWFC – he’s currently on loan with Oxford United but there’s talk of a potential recall in order to get him into the Championship.”

In Crann’s report for the Sheffield Star, he states that the Owls “aren’t the only Championship outfit believed to be interested in his services with Birmingham City also thought to be keeping tabs on him” , and that “his reputation as a ball-playing shot-stopper would make him an interesting addition considering the way that Rohl wants his team to play.”

If Brighton is willing to risk losing a gifted young player for the rest of the season, Beadle may be a very interesting addition for the Owls when he joins them next month, even if he is just on loan.

The 19-year-old Englishman has already established himself at the senior level, making an impression while on loan at Oxford United. The reported Wednesday target has made 21 starts in League One this season, taking home one WhoScored Man of the Match award in the process.

Cameron Dawson feels like Hillsborough’s first choice right now, which makes sense given his excellent run of play under Rohl, which included a crucial penalty save against Stoke City.

But Beadle may provide fierce competition for playing time, and the Owls boss would not think twice to start him right away if he believes that Beadle is a better fit for his style of play.

Beadle might be the next piece in Wednesday’s puzzle. Having a ‘keeper who is superb with the ball at his feet is so crucial for many clubs nowadays; Alisson and Ederson at Liverpool and Manchester City, respectively, are perfect examples.
