Lakers News: 2023 LA Role Player Suspended 25 Games For Using Banned Substances

Was he juicing during LA’s playoff run?

Former 2022-23 Los Angeles Lakers center Tristan Thompson, now with the Cleveland Cavaliers, faces an instant 25-game suspension after testing positive for two banned substances, per an NBA press release.

The 6’9″ big man tested positive for the prohibited ibutamoren and SARM LGD-4033, listed on the league’s official tally of “steroids and performance enhancing drugs.”

After not suiting up for anyone during the 2022-23 regular season, Thompson (and Shaquille Harrison) signed a deal with the Lakers on the last day of that regular season, as break-glass-in-case-of-emergency additions for LA’s playoff run.

Thompson was mostly relegated to mop-up duty as essentially the Lakers’ 14th man through the first two rounds of the playoffs, though he subsequently showed signs of life in LA’s Western Conference Finals series against Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets, playing tough, physical defense while leapfrogging over Mo Bamba and Wenyen Gabriel in Darvin Ham’s abbreviated rotation.

He then signed a minimum deal with the Cavaliers during the 2023 offseason, as the Lakers opted to move in a more youth-oriented direction, inking Jaxson Hayes and Christian Wood to veteran’s minimum salaries instead. Hayes is out of Darvin Ham’s preferred rotation, and Wood has added a shooting dimension Thompson never could have offered.
