The NSW Blues will need to find a new coach for the 2024 series after Brad Fittler sensationally resigned from the role, effective immediately.

The news comes as a shock given reports this week had indicated the Blues were willing to offer Fittler a 12-month coaching extension.

In fact, there were claims Fittler had pitched to the NSW Rugby League board the prospect of having Bulldogs supremo Phil Gould involved in the Blues set-up next year.

NSW Rugby League confirmed Fittler would be stepping down from the role on Thursday, thanking him for his contribution after guiding the Blues to three series wins.

“The Board understands and respects his decision,” NSWRL Chairman Paul Conlon said.

“Freddy was a legend as a player and returned to coach the team at a time when his state needed him.

“He enjoyed immediate success and his series win in 2021, which included record scorelines in Townsville and Brisbane, will go down in NSW Blues history.

“He also contributed through other programs including his Hogs motorcycle rides in regional NSW which played a big part in uniting the state.

“He holds a special place in NSW Rugby League history.”

“I loved doing the job and NSW and I will always love NSW,” Fittler said.

NSW Rugby League also confirmed in a statement on Thursday that they were accepting expressions of interest for the vacant role.

While Gould’s name may well be floated as a potential candidate, Matty Johns said on Thursday he believes the Blues should look to either Craig Bellamy or Ricky Stuart.
