The likely roadmap for Todd Bowles and the rest of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 2023 season.

Todd Bowles’s head coaching job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers appears to be safe throughout the rest of the regular season.

After Tom Brady retired earlier this year, so much was unknown about the direction of the Buccaneers. They hired Dave Canales as the offensive coordinator and brought Baker Mayfield in from free agency. This formula led to an impressive 3-1 start to the season.

Then, the Buccaneers’ honeymoon phase ended and the team came back down to earth. Since the 3-1 start, the Buccaneers are 2-6. Though things have since hit the fan, Bowles’ job as head coach remains safe for the rest of the season, Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud has learned.

Bowles’ first full season as a head coach was last season, where he and Brady went 8-9, which, surprisingly, was good enough for a playoff berth in a not-so-good NFC South.

The 5-7 Buccaneers are one game behind the 6-6 Atlanta Falcons, who lead the NFC South this season.

The playoffs aren’t out of grasp, especially if the Buccaneers can return to the form they had early in the season. Making any sideline decisions would derail a season that has the Buccaneers slightly trailing the playoffs race.

Still, this doesn’t rule out any coaching changes for the offseason. It might be time for a coaching revamp. It’s no fault of Bowles, but the Buccaneers are in need of a reset, and that oftentimes includes the coaching staff just as much as a roster reset.

Coaching without having the potential to be fired at any given moment will be comforting for Bowles as he and his staff look to make a midseason turnaround. A playoff berth would change the narrative around this team, and he might be able to coach his way to an extended stay with Tampa Bay and potentially coach a bit further through a potential rebuild.
