Cubs and free agent maintaining open door of communication

The Chicago Cubs could potentially bring Cody Bellinger back in the 2024 season.

The Chicago Cubs didn’t have the Winter Meetings that fans were hoping for. Of course, not landing Juan Soto in a trade hurt the fan base. Even more so, Shohei Ohtani not making a decision yet hurts more than anything else.

While it’s understandable, it’s smart to realize that the Cubs did what they had to do. The team’s still viewed as a finalist for Ohtani and that’s the most important part of what happened during the Winter Meetings.

If they don’t land Ohtani or Yoshinobu Yamamoto, there are other free agent and trade options for Chicago to shift to. Of those available, a reunion with free agent Cody Bellinger could be an option.

Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reported the following on what Jed Hoyer had to say about keeping that door open with Bellinger.

“I wouldn’t talk about that, but we have a good relationship,” Hoyer said. “We were texting the other day about his (comeback player of the year) award. He’s got nothing but positive thoughts about the organization. We have nothing but positive thoughts about him.”

While landing Ohtani would be the bigger move, bringing Bellinger back can be a smart decision for the Cubs. After what he did for the team last season, it’s going to be hard to replace his production.

Bellinger took a prove-it deal with Chicago and showed MLB general managers why he should be looked at as one of the top players in the game still.

Things should start moving for the Cubs sometime in the near future, especially if Ohtani makes his decision on Friday.
