Gold Coast Titans are grappling with additional injury setbacks as fullback Phil Sami failed to pass a fitness assessment, while Tanah Boyd is being considered for a possible return as halfback.

In preparation for their upcoming home match against Manly on Saturday night, the Titans had a light training session on Friday.

Boyd, who was omitted from the squad for last week’s narrow 21-20 defeat to Canberra, rejoined the main training group after being listed on an extended bench.

AJ Brimson, known for his versatility, is expected to assume the fullback role against Manly. Brimson had filled in at halfback and switched to fullback last week following Jayden Campbell’s injury, which will keep him sidelined for four to six weeks due to a posterior cruciate ligament injury to his left knee.

Sami, initially included in the lineup against Manly, was unable to pass the fitness test conducted on Thursday due to an ankle injury.

Boyd, who represented Ipswich in the Queensland Cup last week, struggled to perform at his best in the early rounds of the season.

Titans coach Des Hasler commented on Boyd’s situation, stating that the player had areas of his game to improve upon and acknowledged his improved performance last week with Ipswich.

Regarding Boyd’s potential as a long-term halfback for the Titans, Hasler expressed confidence in the 23-year-old’s abilities, despite the team’s current struggles.

The Titans find themselves at the bottom of the ladder after enduring five consecutive losses, a situation Hasler attributed to their struggles in maintaining possession, which is crucial in the current style of play.

Queensland forward David Fifita has made a comeback from a preseason pectoral injury, featuring in three games thus far. He has been utilized both off the bench and as a starting second-rower.

Fifita’s recent performance against Canberra, where he recorded a season-high 190 meters in 67 minutes off the bench, showcased his impact. Hasler explained that Fifita’s bench role was strategic, aimed at managing his playing time and maximizing his effectiveness given his lack of preseason preparation.

Hasler hinted at a potential full-time starting role for Fifita in the near future, as the team continues to optimize his contributions and capitalize on his natural talents.
