After losing a body part on the pitch, the 18-year-old collapsed on the ground, his blood streaming out of him.

Nate Caddy, an Essendon first-round draft pick, lost his teeth in a horrific altercation with teammate Sam Weideman in the first few minutes of the Bombers’ VFL match against Sandringham on Sunday and had to leave the game for the hospital.

The 18-year-old struck Weideman’s head from behind during a marking contest, knocking out one of his front teeth in the process.

Slow-mo replays showed Caddy collapsing to the ground while the tooth visibly fell on its own trajectory.

He was taken off in the hands of Essendon medical staff while blood poured from his mouth.

But the tooth was left out on the field, until a Bombers trainer went back out and retrieved it.

The quick-thinking staff member then took the tooth to a coffee truck on the other side of the ground to put it in a glass of milk as quickly as possible.

When a tooth dislodges from its socket, it’s important to keep it moist to increase the likelihood of saving the tooth. Milk has vital proteins and sugars that make it perfect for a dental emergency.
