The Cheetahs have decided not to align with other local unions in their opposition to paying the fees imposed by SA Rugby for hosting international matches in 2024.

As reported in a Sunday article by Rapport, rugby administrators from the Sharks, Bulls, Stormers, and Lions have sought legal advice following SARU’s request for a combined total of R85 million in fees for hosting six Tests within the Republic this year.

However, Ross van Reenen, CEO of the Cheetahs, clarified to News24 that the Free State team appreciates the opportunity to host a Test match. He pointed out that the hosting fee structure has traditionally been customary.

In a historic encounter, the Springboks are scheduled to play against Portugal in Bloemfontein on July 20th, marking the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

“To be frank, I must emphasize upfront that we are genuinely appreciative of being granted a Test match for Bloemfontein,” Van Reenen conveyed to News24. “If that necessitates paying a guarantee or hosting fee, then we accept it.

“Essentially, this isn’t some radical or controversial new directive. I vividly recall the substantial fee we had to pay to host the 2018 Test against England.

“I can confidently say that I’m pleased we’ve secured a Test match for the City of Roses. We will certainly honor our financial obligation.”

Van Reenen anticipates that the issue of Test match hosting fees will provoke debate during a SARU general council meeting scheduled for Thursday, stating, “It’s going to be a contentious matter at the meeting. We will have to wait and see.”
